Obituary of Patricia A. Murrell
Pat Feeney Murrell, a visionary artist, teacher, and connoisseur of the human spirit, passed away on October 29, 2023, in South Plainfield, NJ. An influential figure in the world of art, Pat was not only an accomplished paper-maker but also a master lithographer, painter, and printmaker.
By her own reflection, Pat mused on the intricate relationship between her and her chosen medium, fiber. Whether it chose her or she chose it, Pat's lifelong dedication to understanding how humanity perceives itself through bodily representation was evident in her work. Beginning in 1974, she embarked on a journey of creating lithographs from imprints of the human body, a collection of which now graces renowned institutions such as the NJ State Museum, Zimmerli Museum, and Hunterdon Art Museum.
Educated at esteemed institutions, Pat held BFA, MA, and MFA degrees in Painting and Printmaking from Massachusetts College of Art, University of Wyoming, and Pratt Institute. Her artistic prowess saw her delve into 'paper personas,' 'body wrapping,' 'remnant boxes,' 'cocoon bundles,' and other intricate creations. Her work with Noho since 1996 brought these pieces to galleries nationwide, captivating audiences with their depth and intricacy. She also frequently exhibited at Hamilton Street Gallery in Bound Brook, NJ.
Pat delved deeply into lithographic body imprints and handmade paper body wrappings. She saw the body as a canvas for humanity's spirit, a lens through which one could explore inner nature. This consistent theme, reflected throughout her works, married traditional processes with modern presentation, producing sculptural book forms and intricate lithographs that captured the essence of human evolution.
Her artistry was more than just a vocation; it was a reflection of her deep spiritual connection, her love for nature, and her belief in the transformative power of art.
Pat's legacy will remain, not just in her artworks but in the hearts and minds of those she touched. A memorial will be organized in her honor on November 9th, 2023 between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm at McCriskin-Gustafson Home For Funerals Home 2425 Plainfield Ave. South Plainfield, NJ.
In remembrance of Pat's passion and contribution, her friends encourage donations to her favored animal rights organizations (Plainfield Area Humane Society, pahs.org), continuing her legacy of love and care for nature.
She will forever be missed but her spirit will live on, immortalized in her creations.
