Obituary of Margaret M. Sheldon

September 6, 1924 - November 11, 2015 Marge was a member of the greatest generation, having lived through the great depression era and WWII. She was a true patriot, born on Labor Day and died on Veterans' Day. She is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Theodore Sheldon, and sons, Richard Lee and Raymond Edward, parents, Mary and Alexander; brothers and sisters, Charles, Elizabeth, Joseph, Anthony, John, Michael, Peter, Edward, George, William and Irene. She is survived by her children: Ronald, Roger, Roy and, Mary Zukaitus, of Florida, and Randy, of California, her 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 3great great grandchild. Mary Margaret Staats was born at Muhlenburg Hospital in Plainfield, NJ. She was baptized at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church where she was a life-long member. She was a graduate of North Plainfield High School (1943), and attended the University of Maryland Nursing School (1944-1945). She was a member of the National Honor and Thespian Societies, she played field hockey and she loved to figure skate. While her brothers were serving in WWII, she worked for the Penn RR in NYC. When she was at a Camp Kilmer USO dance, she met a handsome soldier from Southern Illinois-- Wayne Theodore Sheldon. They married and moved to Illinois, started their family of seven children, six boys and a girl. Marge always signed the family cards, "love Wayne and Marge, 6 R's and MM". They returned to South Plainfield 1954 where Marge was a worker bee. She would use the family station wagon to chauffeur the Sisters of Mercy to their various events. Marge had an endless supply of altar boys for the church in her backyard. Whenever they were needed Marge would march her boys to serve at the altar of Sacred Heart. She was an extrodianry Eucharistic Minister at Sacred Heart a member of the Sacred Heart Altar Rosary Society and was also a member of the Red Hat Club in South Plainfield. She was a den mother, a girl scout leader, a PTA president, a cook in the school lunch program and she organized rallies for the local politicians. After raising her family, she started working full time (1972) for the borough of South Plainfield in the tax assessor's office until she retired in 1998. Marge and Wayne enjoyed their life together, raising their family until Wayne passed away in 1984. For the past twenty years, she's been active with her high school class, organizing the annual reunions, and the monthly dinner meetings. She called her fellow male classmates, "ROMEOs" (Retired Old Men Eating Out). She was a member of the VFW, and took on the women's auxiliary president position until 2012.Her life and her heart were always filled with family and friends through the remaining years in her life. We are proud of all her accomplishments. She loved all of her children, and held a special spot in her heart for her daughter, Mary Margaret . there are so many more loved family and friends too numerous to mention who meant a great deal to her, "thats the story". Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at 9:15am in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield followed by a 10am funeral mass at Sacred Heart RC Church, South Plainfield. Interment will follow at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 from 2-4 & 6-9pm in the funeral home.
