Obituary of Philomena P. DeFillipo

Philomena (Phil) DeFillipo passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Phil was born and raised in South Plainfield where she resided for all her life. During her early years, Phil commuted to New York City every day to her position as a bookkeeper at Gray Advertising. She continued to do so until the train station located in the center of town was closed. Phil then worked for the Borough of South Plainfield in the Treasurer's Office for 24 years. Besides being an avid traveler who loved to share her stories and pictures, Phil was an accomplished seamstress who made her own clothes as well as outfits for her many nieces and their dolls. Phil was a member of the Terra Nova Garden Club and the Sacred Heart Rosary Alter Society. An Avid fan of the opera, Phil was always willing to take the train at Metro Park to get to the Metropolitan Opera. Phil also shared her love of ballet with her nieces, often introducing them to the dance on their first trip into New York City. Phil is predeceased by her brothers Arthur, Alphonso (Chick), Louis and her sister Edith. She is survived by her brothers Hank and Vincent and his wife Lucy. In addition, Phil has 7 nieces and nephews, 9 great nieces and nephews, 3 great-great nieces and nephews and several extended relatives. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 7, 2014 at 10:45am in the McCriskin-Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, NJ followed by a funeral mass at 11:30 AM in Sacred Heart RC Church, South Plainfield Interment will follow in Holy Redeemer Cemetery. Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Sunday, July 6, 2014 from 2-6 pm.
