Petrus "Pete" Vanderhelm
South Plainfield - Petrus Nicolaas "Pete" Vanderhelm, 78, died at his residence on Saturday, February 4, 2012. Born in The Netherlands on January 2, 1934, Pete moved to the United States in 1960, settling to South Plainfield forty-seven years ago.
He was held in a Japanese Internment Camp in Indonesia from 1941-1945. Pete served in the Royal Dutch Navy. He was the co-founder of Cub Scout Troop 224 and also the Pool Captain of the Senior Citizen's Center of South Plainfield. Pete was an active volunteer for RSVP in New Brunswick.
Pete is survived by his wife Wilhelmina C. (Eichhorn) Vanderhelm, his sons Peter, Erik and Tim, daughters-in-law Irene and Debbie, grandchildren; Mark, Joy, Susan, Lauren, Kara, Blaine, C.J., Lea, Richard and Michael and his two sisters; Ria and Liny, both of The Netherlands. Pete also leaves behind many extended family and friends.
At the request of the family, arrangements were held privately from the McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society.
