Obituary of Stanley R. Szumel

Piscataway, NJ – Stanley Richard Szumel, 85, known to many as Stan, passed away at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital at Somerset in Somerville on Friday, August 23, 2024.  Born in Newark to the late Stanley and Dorothy (Fries) Szumel, Stan lived in Irvington before settling to Piscataway.

Stan was honorably discharged as Corporal from the United States Marine Corps In 1960 after faithfully serving his country during the Vietnam War.  He was Chaplain and a life member of the John Basilone Detachment 190 Marine Corps League.   After over forty years of employment with the United States Postal Service, Stan retired as a letter carrier for the township.

An avid sports fan, Stan enjoyed the NY Mets, Giants and Rangers.  He liked to read, make model airplanes and was a history buff.  Stan was a volunteer who assisted in the original restoration of the USS New Jersey in Camden.

Stan leaves behind his loving wife of sixty-four years; Joy M. Szumel and their three children;  Rich and his wife Sonia of Wimington, DE, Jerry and his wife Amy of Toms River and Rosanne Sucheski and her husband Chris of Middlesex.  He will be missed dearly by his grandchildren; Ryan Szumel, Nicole (Sucheski) De Angelis and her husband Joe, Greg Szumel and his wife Elizabeth, Erika Szumel and Natalie Szumel as well as his two siblings; Jack Silver and Mary Ellen Volkert.

Visitation will be held at Piscataway Funeral Home, 18 Stelton Road, Piscataway, NJ 08854 on Thursday, August 29, 2024 from 3pm until 7pm.  Family and friends may gather directly to Our Lady of Fatima RC Church in Piscataway on Friday, August 30, 2024 for an 11:30am funeral mass.  Mausoleum entombment will follow at Resurrection Burial Park in Piscataway.
