Please share a memory of Margrit to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Margrit A. Geurts, 94, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at her home in South Plainfield.

Born and raised in Rüti, Switzerland to the late Heinrich and Frieda Stüssi, Margrit immigrated to the United States in 1950. Traveling here to work as a nanny, she resided in Ridgewood, NJ.  In 1955, she married Hermann Geurts and they began their 54 years together residing in Queens, NY. Two years later, they settled in South Plainfield, NJ, where they raised their four children and enjoyed the company of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Proud of her heritage, Margrit made it a point to visit family and friends in Switzerland as often as she could. An avid knitter, Margrit could often be found knitting at the South Plainfield Senior Center, making blankets for veterans and hats and blankets for the babies in the neonatal and intensive care unit.  In the summers, she would ride her bike to the South Plainfield Community Pool. She also enjoyed walks around Round Valley Reservoir.

Margrit is predeceased by her husband, Hermann Geurts; daughter, Diane Gersten; granddaughter Kyliegh Lynn Geurts; sister Friedy Hersberger; and step-sister Elsbeth Staiger.

She is survived by her children, Susan Wilson and her husband Tom, Barbara Strand, and Greg Geurts and his wife Lisa; grandchildren, Briahna and Kelsey Geurts, Emma Gersten, Michael and Randy Strand, and Jeffrey, Jocelyn, and Shannyn Wilson; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Lillian; and son-in-law, Alan Gersten, along with a host of extended relatives and friends, near and far.

A visitation will be held at McCriskin – Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ, on Sunday, July 28, 2024, from 1 PM to 4 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the Geurts family has requested donations be made in Margrit’s name to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, in support of finding loving families for children waiting to be adopted, or to the charity of your choice.
