Obituary of Anne M. Harkins

Anne M. Harkins, 67, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at her home in South Plainfield.

Born in Plainfield, NJ to the late Herman and Thelma Schaeffer, Anne was raised in Edison, NJ. She later settled in South Plainfield with her late husband, Robert Harkins, and has been a resident since.

Early in her career, Anne worked as a secretary for a local law firm, before leaving work to raise her daughter Emily. Later in life, she went back to work at a thrift store, Close Out Corner, not far from the family home, in South Plainfield.

Anne was fond of gardening, painting watching old movies, and reading books. She loved horses and cooking shows, although cooking became something she despised later in life. Above all else, Anne cherished time spent with family and friends.

Predeceased by her husband, Robert Harkins, Anne is survived by her loving daughter, Emily Harkins. She will also be missed by her siblings, Paul Schaeffer and his wife Annette, Jeanne Dearden and her husband James, Mark Schaeffer and his wife Maryanne, Mary-Jo Nelson and her husband Donald, and Carol Toro, along with a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, extended relatives, and friends.

A visitation will be held at the McCriskin – Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ, on Thursday, May 30, 2024, from 10 AM to 12 PM.

Funeral services will be held in the funeral home beginning at 11:30 AM.

Entombment will follow at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, 1734 Clinton Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, the Harkins family has requested donations be made to the Plainfield Area Humane Society, an organization close to Anne’s heart.
