I became friends with Karen while working at Van Derveer Elementary School. What really sealed our bond was our love of Dancing With The Stars. Karen and I spent many lunches discussing her love of travel, family and just general life. Karen was a warm, welcoming person who invited you into her life. I am so grateful that she gave me that honor. Rest in Peace my friend

I was one of the lucky ones who had the privilege of teaching with Karen in Second Grade. She always had a smile on her face and was very helpful whenever I had a question, and I had a lot as a new teacher. She was just a nice person. She gave me her recipe for Irish Soda Bread over 25 years ago and I make it every year. We kept in touch over the years with Christmas cards and I enjoyed reading about what was happening in the Murphy family. She will be deeply missed. My condolences to Jim & Erin. May your memories bring you some comfort during this difficult time.

I am a friend of Erin. She is an amazing woman who makes a difference everyday in so many ways. I mourn her loss as there have been a few challenges over the past few years. Our minds know you and Jimmy are at peace but our hearts are sad. Take care of Erin snd Mr Murphy as they adjust to life without your beautiful smile. Peace to all your family and friends. You will be missed and your life celebrated until we meet again.

Every morning I had to pass Karen’s classroom in order to reach my own, and that is how our friendship began. She was always welcoming, organized, and smiling, and the students’ work on display outside the classroom was filled with bright colors, stickers and glitter. Karen loved and supported the arts. She and I applauded Baryshnikov’s many moves up, over, around and through a chair, more moves than her second graders could have imagined. We saw JamesTaylor, B. B. King and many others perform. She and Jim were always among the first to enjoy Broadway shows. She joined Erin in rooting for the Boston Red Socks. But her favorite sport was shopping! What an expert she was at that. We had so many adventures together. I miss her always.

It was my pleasure to be one of Mrs Murphy’s fourth grade students at OLMV, prior to her maternity leave (spring of 1976.) I remember her speaking of performing in the NY World’s Fair as a twirler. One of her signature assignments in history involved students seeking out products “Made in NJ” and displaying them in class. Ours was a class of 30+ and she challenged us in many ways. May she rest in peace.

That is a lovely photo of Karen with the smile I first encountered at OLMV School many years ago. In fact, I can’t remember Karen without a smile. We will treasure our memories of our warm and cheerful friend who, along with Jim, welcomed us to NJ. May Karen and her family be at peace.
