Obituary of Barton D. Missimer
Barton Missimer, a resident of South Plainfield, passed away peacefully in JFK Hospital on August 7th. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Joanne (Volpe), his son Jeffrey and daughter in-law Masako, his in-laws Marc, Tom, Devin and Cheryle along with 20 nieces and nephews, 16 great nieces and nephews, and one great-great niece. He was predeceased by his father Leon, mother Adelaide Boorse, brothers Leon and Gordon and sister Evelyn and their spouses.
He was born on May 23, 1936 in Pottstown Pennsylvania. In 1937 the Missimer family relocated to Plainfield, NJ where he grew up with his older brother Gordon and younger sister Evelyn. He graduated from Plainfield High School in 1954 and attended Rutgers University in the fall of 1955 where he majored in civil engineering.
While serving in the counter-intelligence corps of the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962, Bart was deployed to France which was one of his favorite life experiences. He met Joanne Volpe in 1967 while both were working at National Gypsum in Raritan, NJ. They fell in love, married and made a home in South Plainfield.
Golfing, fishing, a challenging crossword and spending time with his canine companion, Charlie, were his passions. His favorite time of the day was 5pm – Martini time. He cherished the time spent out on the back deck with wife Joanne, friend Carol and anyone who could join.
Bart was known by friends and family as a sharp intellect with a quick wit and had a great sense of humor. Most of all, he was a kind and decent man and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Bart’s life will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2021 in the South Plainfield Funeral Home, 2456 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield NJ 07080 from 1:30PM – 4:30PM. Memorial services will begin at 3PM, which will be livestreamed via YouTube Live. A link will a appear with in the obituary 24 hours prior to the service.
