Robert E. Mayer of South Plainfield died January 29, 2021 at the age of 92.  The son of Sarah and Edward Mayer, Bob was born in Queens, NY on February 23, 1928.  He attended NYC public schools and graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in June 1945. He attended Cooper Union in New York City for his undergraduate and received his Masters degree in Pastoral Counseling from Iona College.

From 1945 to 1950, Bob was employed at the Automatic Switch Company as a draftsman.  From 1958-1971 he was an Associate Pastor in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trenton.  After 1972, Bob was employed as a Mental Health Clinician at UMDNJ-UBHC at the Dunellen and Edison offices for over 25 years.

Bob moved to South Plainfield in 1974 and lived there until his death.  He attended and volunteered at St. Luke’s RC Church in North Plainfield as an usher, a lector, and a member of the Reflections on Faith group.  He was also a big fan of the NY Giants and Yankees.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Marilyn (Radano-DeNitzio); two children, Lynn Moskal (Dennis) and William DeNitzio (MaryJane); five grandchildren, Brittany Lillis (Michael), Joseph DeNitzio, Brooke Stevens (Albert), Timothy and Rebecca Moskal; three great-grandchildren, Olivia & Leah Stevens and Carson Joseph Lillis. Also he is survived by one niece, Joan VanNest (James), two nephews, Edward & William Tullis, plus many friends.

Throughout Bob’s life he had many titles but he always said, “My favorite name is Gramps.”

Arrangements are private and under the direction of the McCriskin - Gustafson Home for Funerals in South Plainfield.  Due to the ongoing Covid pandemic and the family’s desire for safety, Bob’s funeral will be private.  In the future a memorial celebration will be held honoring Bob and the life he lived so well.

Any donations in Bob’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society, Leukemia and Lymphoma  Society, or Alzheimer’s   Association.
