Obituary of Marie Devries
Marie “Miep” Devries, 88, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2019 at JFK Haven Hospice in Edison. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Born and raised in Utrecht, Netherlands, Miep and her husband, Oege, immigrated to the United States in 1955, residing in Hoboken before relocating with their daughter and making South Plainfield their permanent home.
Miep was a talented Seamstress. She worked for Stessl and Neuegbauer in Summit for many years, specializing in crafting drapery. She had a passion for and specialized in creating lampshades. Her artistry also extended to knitting, which she often shared with others including knitting vests for the Seaman’s Mission as well as caps for the baby health kits for the Church World Service Group. She was a faithful member of the Trinity Reformed Church where she served as a choir member and shared her time with the Jacoba Circle and Broek Circle.
Throughout the years, Miep was a volunteer with her daughters activities, serving as a classroom mom, a Girl Scout chaperone, a cookie mom, and sewing costumes for the arts departments.
She is predeceased by her husband, Oege Devries, her parents, Johannes Christiaan Ockeloen and Marie Woortman- Ockeloen, and her brothers, Johan and Klaas.
She is survived by her daughter, Lory Jackson-Alcaro and her husband, Bob and her grandchildren, Jason and Joshua.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday September 4, 2019, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave. South Plainfield, NJ 07080.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday September 5, 2019, at 11 a.m., at the Trinity Reformed Church, 401 Greenbrook Rd., North Plainfield, NJ 07063. Interment to follow at Clover Leaf Memorial park, Woodbridge.
