Obituary of Americo Joseph Varone

Boynton Beach, FL - Americo Joseph "Rick" Varone, 86, died Thursday, December 13, 2018 at home. Born in Elizabeth, NJ to the late John and Mary (Marchione) Varone, Rick grew up in Linden, NJ. He resided in the New York areas of Fort Salonga and Staten Island, and New Jersey townships of East Brunswick and Marlboro. Rick worked in hospital administration, rising through the ranks to President and CEO of a large hospital system in New York City. A very well respected leader in the healthcare industry, Rick was among the first CEO's to advertise for their hospital system. He was a member of over half a dozen boards including; Staten Island University Hospital, Edgers Nursing Home, Premier Healthcare, and Greater New York Hospital Association. Rick as served as a member of the executive committee on the Long Island Jewish Hospital. During his tenure, Rick assisted a with multi-billion dollar merger with North Shore University Hospital. He became a keynote speaker on the topic of medical specialties and the health care market in Provence, France. After retirement, Rick and his wife, Barbara, relocated to Florida, residing in Boca Raton, Highland Beach and most recently, Boynton Beach. There he served as an adjudicator for the city of Highland Beach's architectural review. Rick proudly served with the United States Army during the Korean War. He absolutely loved to travel and saw much of the world, including more than 30 countries. An avid reader, Rick was on a constant quest to educate himself about people or topics that he didn't know much about. Rick taught himself about and collected wine, and learned to pilot glider airplanes. He enjoyed keeping himself physically fit, exercising several times a week up until he was in his mid-80s. A man who was adored by his wife, his children, their spouses, and his grandchildren, he will forever be remembered as an incredibly intelligent, strong, proud, and completely devoted family man. Surviving are his wife, Barbara (Birnirt) Varone of Boynton Beach, FL; three children, Melissa Abboushi and husband Chris of Lake Bluff, IL, Kim Carlin and husband Joe of Landenberg, PA and John Varone and wife Theresa of Boynton Beach, FL, and six grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made in Rick's memory to either Trustbridge Hospice Foundation in Palm Beach, Florida or to a local hospice of your choice.
