Obituary of Nettie Tessi Sherby

Nettie Tessi Sherby, 91, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2018 at JFK Hospital, Edison, NJ.
Born October 18, 1926 to Mykita and Julia Sharyk and lived in South Plainfield, NJ her growing years. She attended North Plainfield High School and graduated high honor roll in 1944.
On May 15, 1948, she married her beloved husband John Sherby from Detroit, Michigan. They lived in Michigan for five years then moved to Plainfield, New Jersey.
She sang "Pennies from Heaven" at the Royal Scottie Studio in New York and other popular songs. She worked as a payroll clerk at Harris Structual Steel in South Plainfield followed by Macy's in Plainfield where she worked her way up from a sales cashier to a night-time Service Mgr., retiring at age 70.
Nettie was a devoted mother taking good care of her family, always sacrificing her needs for the good of the family. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning peaches and tomato sauce, baking and embroidering ties, name placques, handkerchiefs, needlepoint crosses for family, friends, co-workers, priests, Bishops and even Presidents of the United States.
Nettie was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Orthodox Church, South Plainfield, NJ. She served as the Church Board secretary for over 60 years as well as Church Choir Director. In addition, she made Divine Liturgy booklets for parishioners, hand made and embroidered church altar cloths and was a member of the Sisterhood of Myrrh-bearing Women making hundreds of pierogies before she went to work on Thursdays with fellow parishioners.
Nettie will be especially remembered for being a devout member of NBVOC Church for her lifetime contributions there and also receiving the Macy's Community Award and Bamburger's Ambassador Award. She was also Branch 312 Secretary to the Ukrainian National Association (UNA) for many years.
Her husband, John, passed away January 1980 and is survived by her sibling, John Sharyk of Pennsylvania, her three children Doreen Nelson and her husband Tom of Connecticut, John M. Sherby and his wife Janet of New Jersey and Anita Anderson and her husband Edward C. of New Jersey, four grandchildren; Samantha Beschta and her husband Mike, Melissa Nelson and Christopher Nelson of Connecticut, Victoria Sherby of New Jersey and two great-grandchildren; Dashiell and Penelope Beschta of Connecticut. Also surviving are nieces; Sandra Weiner, Lauren McKenzie of New Jersey, and Susan DeVico of Pennsylvania.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 4 pm to 8 pm in the McCriskin-Gustafson Home For Funerals 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ with Panachida at 7:00 pm.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at 9:30am at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Orthodox Church, 416 Delmore Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ followed by her burial at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains, NJ.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Nettie's honor to Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Orthodox Church, 416 Delmore Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080 or to Meals on Wheels, Attention: Celeste, 1025 Pennsylvania Avenue, Linden, NJ 07036.
