Walter Robert Hohner

Another member of the Greatest Generation has joined its ranks in Heaven. Walter "Walt" Robert Hohner, 96, of Piscataway, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, February 1, 2025.

Born to Robert and Louise (Held) Hohner in Elizabeth, NJ, Walt grew up in Newark. He enlisted in the United States Navy during WWII, proudly serving on the USS Albany, USS Wisconsin, and USS Portsmouth until he was honorably discharged in 1947.

Walt was a talented carpenter, starting his career with Becker Construction of Newark, where he worked for 28 years. He later retired as a Superintendent with Damon G. Douglas of Cranford. During his career, he was instrumental in the construction of many buildings in the greater NYC area, including JFK Hospital.

Walt made Piscataway Township his home for over 50 years. He enjoyed annual trips to his “happy place,” Lake George, New York, where his passion for boating and the water was unrivaled. He was known for his larger-than-life personality, quick wit, and humor. His carpentry skills were unparalleled, earning him the title of master craftsman. Many fondly referred to his workshop as the "Hohner Depot." He was always eager to share his skills with friends, children, and grandchildren.

An active community member, Walt was involved in the Middlesex American Legion Post 306, the United States Navy Cruiser Sailors Association, and the Piscataway Seniors Advisory Commission. He also loved singing and was a dedicated New York Giants fan.

Predeceased by his son, Raymond Hohner; Walt is survived by his devoted and beloved wife of 50 years, Patricia (Carr) Hohner; three daughters, Nancy Epenshade, Lisa Chavez, and Cheryl Griffith and two sons, Paul Hohner and Ernest Hohner. Walt will also be remembered by his twelve grandchildren: Fred, Nick, Tim, Billy, Heather, Kevin, Ryan, Elizabeth, Matthew, Stephen, Robert, and Eric; seventeen great-grandchildren and extended family, including Lindsay Chavez, Bill Griffith, Mary Hohner and Karen Hohner.  He had a large circle of friends, including Lou and Marta Romero and Jack and Anita Gauker.

If the true essence of leadership is caring about your people, Walt exemplified this as a leader at home, work, in the community, and within veteran circles.

Walt’s legacy of love, laughter, and craftsmanship will live on in the hearts and hands of those he touched.

Non sibi sed patriae – Not for self, but for country.

A celebration of Walt’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to Wounded Warrior Project in his memory. www.woundedwarriorproject.org
